After a terrific string of albums in the early ’90s, 8Ball & MJG finally come through with their magnum opus in 1995. The album title is pretty accurate, as the duo could do no absolutely no wrong at this point in their careers. With their first two releases, 8Ball & MJG had helped establish Memphis as a legitimate hip-hop hub, coming through with some awesome gangsta rap releases, increasing the funk influences along the way. On On Top of the World, 8Ball & MJG hit their peak, trading bars for over 70 minutes, with only a handful of features, all of which are outstanding. While a lot of the Southern hip-hop albums of the era clock in at a similar length, not many stand out in an incredibly unique manner. Most early No Limit records grow tiresome at about the halfway point, suffering from repetitive beats and cliche lyrics. However, there really isn’t a weak song on this release, making the length of this album a strength.
This is really some futuristic hip-hop that helped establish a new region. Memphis was virtually unknown in 1995, with most rappers/producers still selling cassettes out of the trunks of their cars. Even future superstars Three Six Mafia hadn’t released their debut album. Compare Mystic Stylez to On Top of The World and you can honestly tell why 8Ball & MJG managed to gain more commercial success. DJ Paul/Juicy J paint an incredible, brooding atmosphere on Mystic Stylez but On Top of the World just has more funk, more grooves and much catchier hooks. Plus Three Six has some legitimately terrifying lyrics on their debut. Though 8Ball & MJG hail from Memphis, this album was actually recorded in Houston – and it’s apparent from the start. Funk dominates, with syrup-slathered guitar, heavy synths and wavy bass lines riding smoothly all throughout. It sounds much more like UGK than most of the Memphis scene.
As a whole, this album is incredible, despite its fairly overwhelming length. And it’s hard not to like an album featuring “Space Age Pimpin” (see Marvin Gaye’s “A Funky Space Reincarnation” for their a similar concept). If you have any interest in Southern hip-hop, especially the Houston/Memphis scene here’s a fantastic place to start. Give it a listen if you can spare the time.
